Changes in habits

Take note of the amounts that your guinea pigs eat and drink every day, and watch for any changes in an individual’s eating, drinking or toileting habits. For example, if they are having difficulty in eating, have stopped eating or there is a reduction in the amount of droppings, or they stop, or if there are soft droppings sticking to their back end or lying around the cage, talk to your vet straight away as they could be ill.

Things to avoid

Be aware that there are also many wild plants such as dock, bluebells and ragwort, as well as garden plants such as ivy, foxglove, oleander, crocuses, daffodils and tulips, that are poisonous to guinea pigs. There is more on poisonous substances on here. If you are not sure whether a plant is safe for your guinea pigs, do not give it to them. If you think your guinea pigs may have eaten something poisonous, speak to your vet immediately.

Your vet can show you how to perform health and weight checks.
